Reading Collective - When Abortion was a Crime

Join us for our Reading Collective as we explore When Abortion Was a Crime: Women, Medicine, and Law in the United States, 1867–1973 by historian Leslie J. Reagan.

In this groundbreaking historical work, Reagan examines the criminalization of abortion in the United States, revealing how reproductive healthcare became a battleground for medical authority, government control, and women's bodily autonomy.

Through our collective reading, we explore the history of abortion restrictions, the experiences of women who sought abortions despite their criminalization, and the roles of physicians, lawmakers, and law enforcement in regulating reproductive freedom. We also examine how race, class, and economic inequality shaped women's access to abortion and their experiences within the legal and medical systems.

Together, we'll critically engage with Reagan's historical research, challenge common misconceptions about abortion in American history, and connect the struggles for reproductive autonomy to contemporary debates surrounding reproductive rights, bodily autonomy, and state control.

Read along, challenge ideas, and join the conversation! 🌹
