Reading Collective - When Abortion was a Crime

Join us for our Reading Collective as we explore When Abortion Was a Crime: Women, Medicine, and Law in the United States, 1867–1973 by historian Leslie J. Reagan.

In this groundbreaking historical work, Reagan examines the criminalization of abortion in the United States, revealing how reproductive healthcare became a battleground for medical authority, government control, and women's bodily autonomy.

Through our collective reading, we explore the history of abortion restrictions, the experiences of women who sought abortions despite their criminalization, and the roles of physicians, lawmakers, and law enforcement in regulating reproductive freedom. We also examine how race, class, and economic inequality shaped women's access to abortion and their experiences within the legal and medical systems.

Together, we'll critically engage with Reagan's historical research, challenge common misconceptions about abortion in American history, and connect the struggles for reproductive autonomy to contemporary debates surrounding reproductive rights, bodily autonomy, and state control.

Reading Collective - Imperialism the highest stage of capitalism

Join us for our Reading Collective as we explore Imperialism, the Highest Stage of Capitalism by revolutionary theorist Vladimir Lenin.

In this influential work, Lenin examines the development of capitalism into its imperialist stage, exploring how the concentration of wealth, the rise of monopolies, and the dominance of finance capital shape global economic and political relationships.

Through our collective reading, we examine the relationship between capitalism, colonialism, economic exploitation, and imperialist expansion. We explore Lenin's arguments about the division of the world among capitalist powers, the export of capital, and the role of imperialism in sustaining global inequalities.

Together, we'll critically engage with Lenin's analysis, connect his theories to historical and contemporary events, and discuss the continuing relevance of imperialism in understanding the global capitalist system.

Reading Collective - Down Girl

Join us for Episode 5 of our Reading Collective as we continue exploring Down Girl: The Logic of Misogyny by feminist philosopher Kate Manne.

In this groundbreaking work, Manne challenges conventional understandings of misogyny, examining how it functions not simply as a hatred of women, but as a system of social enforcement designed to uphold patriarchal expectations and punish women who challenge them.

Through our collective reading, we explore the relationship between sexism, misogyny, power, and gendered expectations while connecting Manne's arguments to the broader structures that shape women's experiences.
